A lot of otaku sentiment on 2-ch is very rabidly anti-China and anti-Korea. Maybe that can be construed as "conservative."

while i wouldn’t say the essay/review isn’t insightful the discussion surely reveals a bit about the participants.

My interpretation of this was, "If you can't nitpick, why comment?"

I think otaku culture has risen up lately because everyone else has completely dropped the ball in being dutiful consumers. If the whole real goal of this pop culture game is to sell stuff, Akihabara is way more important than the vestiges of Ura-Harajuku or something. Same goes for foreign exportation: otaku culture has a commercial flow not seen in indie music.

Along with otaku culture...

The passing mention of otaku seems to be inevitable nowadays. Having followed this blog since the Neomarxisme days, sometimes I wonder what your "take" on this subject would be, though.

In my opinion, most otaku also lead a consumer lifestyle and it's more so than ever. Just look at the booming market of anime-related collectibles. While there's definitely a distinct otaku subculture, most of them are far from being "delinquents" -- if a bit of social outcasts -- and indeed pose no real threat to society. (This point probably has been made 100+ times, though.)

In fact I've long been troubled by the conservatism -- when applied to the real world -- that seems to be embedded in otaku culture. Well, at least in the context of East Asia. Apparently things are somewhat different in, say, North America where God-fearing Republican/Conservative otaku are in the absolute minority. But here I digress.

Such as muddled thinking? It certainly cannot be said that I am an unhappy reader, but it is usually easier to write a double negative than it is to interpret it.
