Are there any other legit contenders for a Japanese equivalent of Santa Baby?

To be honest I can't think of any -- Yuming has totally saturated the market. That's why I asserted rather than argued. I should have known better...

Even in the world of non-sexy songs, all I can think of is "Awatenbō no Santa Claus" -- though this is kind of interesting in itself, presenting a fallible and even slapsticky Santa as it does. Maybe next year...

Eric: Yeah, and she also wrote a bunch of other songs that became hits in the 70s for other people. Where would Hi-Fi Set be without Yuming?

My wife is a big Yumin fan. I like a lot of her stuff too. I wouldn't say that "Koibito ga Santa Claus" was one of my favorites, but I do like the album Surf and Snow; that's one of the CDs we often listen when driving up to go skiing.

Are there any other legit contenders for a Japanese equivalent of Santa Baby? You pose the question, offer an obvious choice right away. Especially given that you offer an alternative English song in "I Saw Mommy, "I would have loved to have a list of the other candidate Japanese songs, and a bit more explication of why, although these two songs have such different undertones, they are the most similar.

Still, although you made that equivalence the major transition in your piece, that's clearly not what you're focusing on.

I'm inclined to agree with the "unsurprising result of Christmas being hijacked by lovers" bit--through the whole piece I was thinking that this kind of song might actually be more expected in the Japanese Christmas context than in the States, and I was glad you mentioned it in the end. Still, I think it could use a mention earlier on for the benefit of readers who may not know what Christmas in Japan is like.

That said, I love the word "Santaic."

Happy new year, and keep up the excellent writing!

John in Ginza,

Now, now. Read it again, and this time don't take it quite so seriously.

I wouldn't mind being topologically conjugate with a 1953 Eartha Kitt. There, I said it.

Merry Christmas to all, especially those schlemiels like me that are working today...
